What is Poole Bike Night?

Anyone vaguely interested in motorcycles will know about Poole Bike Night which is held every Tuesday at Poole Quay from April to September.
It’s an event that allows motorcycle owners to showcase the very latest and brightest new motorcycles they own. Event goers can marvel at the motorcycles and see the very latest designs while enjoying a well earned pint on the quay.

What is happening at the event?

You’ll be able to see the epic Honda Cross Runner we will be showing!

Moto GP in UK this June

This weekend is the much awaited arrival of the Moto GP 2011 at Silverstone. The Moto GP 2011 is going to be one of the first major events to take place at the newly built pits and paddock at Silverstone. The festival which runs from 10-12 June 2011 has been a resounding success every year. This year plans to be even bigger and better, so make sure you don’t miss out!

The Moto GP is an event for the whole family with a range of entertainment that is guaranteed to keep everyone occupied. The range of entertainment includes the Red Bull rookie’s cup, flat track races, stunt displays and air displays. Alongside all this there is the chance for you to get involved with the get on experience zone and the chance for pillion rides on a 1000cc Yamaha R1 superbike. If this all isn’t enough, there will be a range of concerts over the weekend and a funfair to entertain the kids.

For the biking enthusiasts there will be a huge range of bikes at the Moto GP including Honda bikes. This year there will be eight British riders, including world superbike rider Cal Crutchlow. Crutchlow is hoping that he can be the first British winner of an elite class race in 30 years.

However, this year’s favourite to win is Casey Stoner who hasn’t finished outside the top three in the four pre-season tests. Casey, who rides a Honda bike, is the one to watch for this year. The Honda team and Alpinestars have teamed up to give their riders technologically advanced race suits with state of the art protection.

Alpinestars Durban Jacket

The Alpinestars Durban Jacket and Alpinestars Durban Pants, is the best kit that I have ever owned. Let me explain why, by giving you a brief explanation of the features. In this blog I am going to concentrate on the Jacket. I will submit a separate blog for the pants.

Alpinestars Durban Jacket. This product is loaded with many features, First the exterior of the jacket, There are several vents located on the front of the jacket and also a large vent on both sleeves. The arms are removable and can be placed in the removable rear pocket. Which, I have never done, as my riding is road based and by removing the sleeves I would be removing a substantial part of the protection. Arms and waist adjusters are provided to gain optimum fit, with a really good simply entry on the cuff for gloves to fit into the sleeve. Large pockets on either side of the chest that are not waterproof, but provide easy access for money etc. Below the two large pockets are two waterproof pockets to keep my valuables dry when the weather turns.

Elbows are protected by ceramic coated Superfabric, which gives me added peace of mind. Large high visibility reflective stripes cross the back of the arms and across the back. I have already mentioned the removable rear large utility pocket, which is great. I have had many day trips and I often remove the inner lining, and wear as a wind breaker and I also remove the rear pocket, which has a handy carrying strap. I then put the Durban jacket into the top box and I am free to roam in comfort, great. The jacket is equipped with a two liter bladder storage pocket, again I have never used this, but I suspect that if adventure riding is your game then this feature would be ace. Inside the jacket there is a pocket which is highlighted with a red zip. This feature exists on many Alpinestars jackets. It is very handy at petrol stations. The Durban Jacket has a Ultra-lightweight, removable Gore-Tex® Paclite® membrane with micro-fleece inserts, This really does keep me warm in all weather conditions.

I bought my jacket in January 2011. During January and February in the UK the weather was bitter, it always is. I rode constantly in my Durban gear. It was fantastic. At no point was I cold, the fit is made to measure, due to the high flexibility in the adjustment, which is available. The amazing thing is, now it is warm I am still riding in the jacket, but I have removed the lining and I have opened the vents to circulate the air.

I am 100% impressed and I urge everyone who rides all year to visit your Alpinestar dealer and try one on. You will not be disappointed.

The importance of buying genuine motorcycle parts

How to keep your Honda Bikes spick and span for longer

Buying a motorcycle is a huge investment and one that you should definitely consider. The difference that a good motorcycle can make to the quality of your life is amazing.

However, you should definitely keep it in the best nick to ensure you get the best out of it for as long as possible.

Here are a few tips for you:

It’s obvious but just clean, clean, clean. Make sure you do it at least once a week. Not only do your honda bikes look awesome, it also keeps you very much in the loop with regards to any changes that might be happening, like general wear and tear.

Third party help- getting your friend to check your bike every now and then might also help you spot potential problems before they get out of hand. What is the MOTO GP

What is the Moto GP?

The MotoGP is the best motorcycling competition in the motorbike universe. It was established as a World Championship in 1949, which means it is 63 years young and the oldest motorcycling championship in the entire world.

What happens?

The race visits fourteen countries and is covered all over the world. There are eighteen races. These are highly popular and really showcase the awesomeness of motorcycling wizardry. Honda is one of the four key manufacturers whose Honda bikes are used in the races. The races are massively popular as well, with two million people coming to see them in 2010. Now that’s a good way to spend a weekend! The races fall on the Grand Prix weekend and are part of the festivities.

What’s occurring this year?

The current MotoGP champion is Jorge Lorenzo, who rode his way to victory in 2010.
The 2011 event will have the highest amount of British entrants for 22 years! Five of the riders have come directly through the Red Bull MotoGP academy proving to be excellent home grown talent. All eight UK entrants will be giving it their all.

Valentino Rossi, the nine-time world champion has also won a special award for his comeback and performance during the MotoGP in 2010.

Your First Motorcycle

So you’ve scrimped, saved and waited for this moment for such a long time, the moment where you buy or are ready to buy your first ever motorcycle. You’ve bought your Alpinestars gear, you know all of your local Honda dealers and you’re ready to fly. The feeling is euphoric as you start to taste the freedom of being out on the open road before you’ve even been handed the keys to the city.

There are a few things that need to be considered before you are properly road-worthy. Laws change all the time and we are expected to be aware of and adhere to any changes as soon as they are made effective.

If you’re new to riding a motorcycle or need a refresher on what you need to be aware of, this should be a good starting point for you. This is also good reference material for the parents of anyone thinking of getting a license to ride a motorcycle.

•    To ride a motorcycle you need to be at least seventeen years old. If you want to ride a moped you can be as young as sixteen.
•    Your driving license must be Category A where it will specifically allow you to ride motorcycles.
•    A CBT test is compulsory for anyone wanting to ride their motorcycle on the road legally, you’ll then be granted the DL196. This enables you to take your theory and practical tests and receive your license upon passing! However you do need to be aware that if you haven’t taken the tests within two years you will need to take the CBT test once more.
•    Make sure your Honda motorcycle parts are well maintained from the beginning, good habits are never too early to start!
•    There are three different types of motorcycle license you could potentially get. The first one is the Category P. This will allow you to ride a moped. As stated, you can do this from the age of 16. The second licence is the Category A1, this is a light motorcycle licence and allows you to ride any motorcycle up to 125CC. The final licence you can get is the category A, this is a full motorcycle licence and you have no restrictions on engine size with this one.
•    Remember that if you pass your practical on an automatic, you’ll only be allowed to ride automatics. Your path to your Honda motorcycles in bike heaven is shorter if you can take on both manual and automatic.

How to keep your bike safe over winter

When the cold weather comes in, with all the extra precautions needed, it is perfectly natural to wonder if you are doing the right thing by running you motorcycle through the season. Here’s how to store your bike over winter and how to prepare for the cold snap in general.

The first absolutely vital thing you need to do is clean you bike from top to bottom, and clean it like you have never cleaned it before in your life. Make sure that not one speck of road salt or mud could lead to the bodywork of your bike being damaged. Clean and dry all of your Honda motorcycle parts properly and they will be there for you in the spring.

After you’ve cleaned the bike, you’ll need to make sure that the relevant areas are properly lubricated. Important bits to do are places like your clutch and brake levers, and centre stand pivots.

Always keep your bike in a garage if you can, it will be protected from the elements and from thieves. Also, make sure you are insured in case your garage floods during the winter, it’s a long shot but floods do happen.

Lube up your chain, oil based lubes work most effectively.

Drain ALL fuel from the tank and the oil should be changed.

Well it’s that times of year again; the clocks have gone back, the days are getting shorter and it’s darker in both the mornings and evenings. Although many riders choose to put their bikes away for the colder months there are still some die-hard riders who will ride their bikes through thick and thin. So here are our top tips to allow you to continuing enjoying your bike through these colder and darker winter months whilst still keeping safe:

1.    Lights
Ensure your lights are in full working order before setting out for any ride. Ensure your lenses are clean and that you know your route well. In the dark those minor roads with little lighting can become a very hazardous trap for even the most experienced of bikers. 2.    Clothing
Clothing can make all the difference to your safety when riding. Not only does it protect you in the case of an accident, but it can also help prevent one in the first place. Milan Motorcycle show gearing up to be a Hot one for Honda

In just two weeks time, the annual Milan motorcycle show will open its doors once again to all those budding motorcycle enthusiasts and it is already rumoured to be one of the hottest shows this year.

Taking place on Thursday 4th November until Sunday 7th November in the Fiera Milano, Milan, the show will be host to all major motorcycle companies including Honda. However, just two weeks before the show, Honda has released a sketch of its latest machine, the VFR adventure style bike. Although the public have never seen this in full production, it is rumoured to contain a beautiful V4 engine however it is also rumoured the V4 engine is a lot smaller in capacity than the one found in the VFR1200.

This year’s show has a lot of hype surrounding it and it is expected that Honda will showcase at least 8 new models this year, although some are far from being production-ready. Tickets to the show are only €18 for adults and €12 for children, so if you happen to have time for a quick getaway, Milan may seem to be the perfect solution!

Westminster wins, bikers lose: £1 a day parking charge is legal

The High Court has ruled in favour of Westminster Council, following a legal battle over their controversial levy of a £1 a day parking fee for motorcycles.

Judge Lord Justice Pitchford rejected claims by Warren Djanogly of the ‘No To Motorbike Parking Fees’campaign that the authority began charging simply to raise revenue, adding the fee was introduced “to improve on-street parking availability for motorcyclists in order to meet actual and anticipated increased demand. The existence of that need cannot be seriously challenged. The evidence was overwhelming.”

Motorcyclists are charged to use any dedicated on-street bay. The charges – which the Council says it will hold at current rates for three years – are £1-a-day fee, or £3.50 a week, £13.50 a month, £33.50 for three months or £100 a year. Riders can park free in the borough’s car parks, although these are not a preferred option in the evening, especially for lone female riders.

Speed camera Switch Off!

The Oxfordshire MP’s are in arguments with the Government regarding the recent switch off of all speed cameras in the area in a bid to save £600,000.

The Government has cut £600,000 from the Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership which is in charge of Oxfordshire’s road safety. This has lead to them being forced to switch off all the speed cameras in the area as they no longer have the funds to run them. The total number of speed cameras being turned off is 79 including 7 traffic light cameras. The Thames Valley Police have agreed to try and still enforce the law whilst on the roads but cannot afford to pay the lump sum to keep them running.

There is a split consensus on this subject as the same thing happened in Swindon over a year ago and there has been no significant difference in road safety. The people of Oxfordshire are also concerned about the switch off and the fact that it has been publically highlighted. Some feel this openly tells people it is ok to speed as the cameras do not work.

For the motorcycle riders of Oxfordshire, the news is probably good news as many of us hate those cameras with a vengeance. Unfortunately, due to the publicity this story has received, the Police will be hot on the tails of any of those caught speeding – so just be careful!

Britain’s Got Biking Talent Competition

Motorbike magazine, Motor Cycle News are running a brand new competition in association with Carole Nash Insurance called Britain’s Got Biking Talent. The competition is judging people on their motorbike building skills in a variety of categories from Street modified to Choppers – there is a category for every bike rider.
In order to enter the competition, you need to send in a photo, specification and a video if possible to the competition web address www.britainsgotbikingtalent.co.uk. The closing date for the competition is 18th August.

There will be two rounds of judging, experts will pick the first 10 finalists and MCN readers will decide upon the final 12. These final 12 will be put in the 2011 Carole Nash calendar and there will be prizes for the top 3 bikes.

3rd Prize is a track day at one of the prestigious UK Club MSV circuits. The choice includes some of the top circuits in the UK including Brands Hatch, Oulton Park, Snetterton, Cadwell Park and Bedford Autodrome.

2nd Prize you can choose from a trip for two to the French Battlefields with MCi Tours or £500 discount on a fly-ride package.

Honda Motorcycles are the Stars of the Motorsports World

With the Moto GP, World Superbikes and British Superbikes all in full swing, June saw some incredible action being bought to the UK from tracks around the world. However, it is not only the riders competition which is hotting up, but the competition between manufacturers – and it’s great to see Honda on top!

The British Superbikes has just completed its 6th race of the season at Knockhill and although only half way through the season, the riders are still battling it out for a comfortable lead on the competition. Josh Brookes of the HM Plant Honda team and Tommy Hill of the Worx Crescent Suzuki team are the current top 2 riders of the season. In the manufacturer’s competition, Honda motorcycles feature four times in the top ten, twice of which are in the top five!

The World Superbike tour has yet to visit the UK but after 8 races the competition is still nail-bitingly close. The Italian Max Biaggi and British Leon Haslam have been fighting it out since the start of the season and have only 15 points between them. Third place is currently held by British Rider Jonathan Rea of the Hannspree Ten Kate Honda team who is desperately trying to fight off Carlos Checa who is a mere 10 points behind.

The Moto GP tour has just seen its annual visit to the UK with a weekend at Silverstone on the 20th June. The top three riders in the Moto GP competition are Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa of Spain and Andrea Dovizioso of Italy, two of which are rider Honda’s. In the manufacturers competition Honda are taking it by storm with 5 of the top ten riders on Honda, and second and third place currently held by Honda riders.

Valentino Rossi Returning to Honda?

Valentino Rossi, arguably one of the best motorcycle racers ever to have lived, may grace a Honda Motorcycle with his presence once again in next year’s Moto GP.

Rossi is a nine-time world champion who left his Honda team back in 2005. The team was gutted to have lost him and envious of Yamaha for managing to sway him across. Since the move Honda has only won one of the seasons in 2006 with Nicky Hayden, when unfortunately Rossi had crashed out earlier in the race.

Rossi had a good beginning to this year’s Moto GP until crashing out of his home town Mugello during the second practice race on Saturday 5th June. He suffered a fractured right tibia which will take over 2 months to repair so will miss the rest of this season. Mugello was the first Moto GP race start he has missed since 1996 when he debuted in the Moto GP competition.

The vice president of Honda Racing Corporation has said that he hasn’t ruled out the chance of Rossi returning to his former team in the 2011 competition. However, this comes at a time when Ducati have decided to make significant changes in order to improve their standings from the current 2010 results. This could see Ducati, Yamaha and Honda all in direct competition to sign Rossi to their teams.

Valentino has yet to comment on the situation and will focus on his recovery before thinking about next year’s season, but is to have stated he knows he already has a bike for next season at Yamaha.

New Airbag Technology – At Last!

It may have taken just over a decade, but Alpinestars has finally done it. This bike racing season sees the brand new Alpinestars electronic airbags being showcased on the track.

This new equipment is a fantastic advance in motorcycle technology and has been a long time coming. For professional riders, the suits come as a potential saviour to their career and could be the difference between minor cuts and bruises and a broken collar bone – resulting in missing the entire seasons racing.

The airbags created by Alpinestars are cleverly encased within the suit itself in the shoulder pads as the neck and collar bones are the most commonly injured area of the body during a road crash. The electronic hub is slotted nicely into the hump behind the neck. This means there is no extra, unnecessary bulk and the entire system only adds a mere 500 grams to the weight of the suit.

The suit itself is a phenomenal design with sensors throughout the body to help the suit predict when the rider is crashing. This ensures the airbags are released at the precise moment needed. Alpinestars have spent the last 10 years developing the algorithms to ensure the airbags are deployed just before impact at an incredible 0.05 seconds. The cylinders used to inflate the airbags are within the shoulders and contain a nitrogen based mix of gases. This gives the rider 5 seconds of protection.

Furthermore, the airbag then retracts ready for a second use should it be needed, allowing the rider to jump back on their bike and continue riding.

This game has multiple levels each with different jump challenges and a career mode with 18 unique levels. Each level also has random features meaning you will never jump the same jump twice. The aim of the game is to perform the best jump possible but you can also make millions by performing the best crash possible. There is prize money for completing the jump as well as impressive crashes and unfortunately after you have crashed, you will have to pay the hospital bill!

Voted the number 1 racing game currently available on the iTunes, Daredevil Dave: Motorcycle Stuntman is infamous for his incredible stunts but also for his horrifying crashes. Whilst many of you will still be opting for the thick winter jackets to protect yourself from the strong winds and rain still lingering, it will soon be time to slip into something a bit more comfortable. During the summer it is important for you to stay warm on your bike ride without over-heating. If you are wearing a thick leather Winter jacket, becoming too hot whilst riding will make it very uncomfortable and ruin your entire ride. So it is best to be prepared and look into something more suitable for the warmer weather.

Summer Rideouts

Now that the weather has started to warm up and the sun has started to come out, it is that time when we start planning our summer rideouts on our Honda bikes. With so many great rideouts across the United Kingdom and into Europe, there is definitely something for everyone whether it is in a group or alone.

When planning a summer rideout there are a few things which you may need to take into consideration. Firstly and most importantly, you should plan a route which avoids main roads, built-up areas and roads which are usually full of traffic. This will ensure you get the best out of the ride and spend your time having fun and not stuck in congestion. The route should also include some scenery and interesting roads to ride or things to see along the way.

When planning the route, you should make sure you know where the local petrol stations, food stops and any other amenities you might require along the way. If you are planning a trip which will take longer than a day, it is a good idea to plan where you are going to stop and where to stay before you go. There are plenty of cheap B&B’s across the country which will be far less expensive then resulting to a hotel or Travel Inn.

Once you have got the route planned out, you should consider the condition of your bike and clothing. Rideouts affect your bike differently to the everyday riding around and you need to make sure your bike is in a good condition and repairs are carried out before you go. This means the general checks that we normally forget to do must be done, for example tyre, oil, brake and light checks.

Also, now we are into the summer, you need to wear appropriate clothing for the ride. This means putting that thick winter jacket away in storage and getting something lightweight which will allow you body to breathe and stop you sweating uncontrollably. The Start of the 2010 British Superbikes

April sees and exciting time for the world of British Motorcycle racing with the start of the long awaited British Superbike season. This competition sees the top teams in the world competing over 7 months across the circuits of Britain, for the title of British Superbikes 2010 Champion.

The first race of the season was held over the Easter bank holiday on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of April with the first visit of the season to Brands Hatch in Kent. The Indy track was used to kick off the season in style and the race saw English rider Sam Lowes take the first win of 2010 with the Honda GNS racing team at just 19 years old. The next race will be held on the 16th, 17th an 18th April in Thruxton just up the road, in Hampshire.

The British Superbikes is a great opportunity for us all to get out on our bikes to see a bit of the action live. There are circuits all over Britain, giving you a great variety of places to visit. These events are renowned for their excitement and nail biting action as well as offering a great day out for the entire family with entertainment and shops onsite.

Poole Quay Bike Night

Held every Tuesday from 6pm at Poole Quay, this is one of the UK’s biggest bike meets, and runs from April to the end of September. (Although bikes have been seen travelling that way already.) This meet is so big that the Quay is closed to traffic, except for bikes of course, and regularly sees 1000+ motorcycles!

Any motorcycle is welcome, and you’ll see all sorts of bike - cruisers, classics, choppers, scooters, racers, street fighters, trikes, learners and everything in between! If your bike is really something special, you might stand a chance of winning the ‘Bike of the Night’ competition.So dust off your Honda bikes and make sure your Honda motorcycle parts are up to scratch!

There are several bars and restaurants along the quay, as well as a Bikers Night burger stand. It does get busy in the height of summer, so it’s worth getting there nice and early, but take care and be sensible riding through town as there is a much higher police presence than usual!

Motorcycle MOT

Every motorcycle requires an MOT test when it reaches 3 years old and then every year after that. It is illegal to use your bike on a public highway without a valid MOT certificate so it is a good idea to check when your MOT is due. It has a habit of creeping up on you and before you know it the MOT has run out and you are being pulled over. You can have an MOT test carried out up to one calendar month before it runs out so make sure you book your test in plenty of time.

Listed below are a few examples of what MOT testers are looking for when they are carrying out the MOT test on your bike. These are simple thing that you can check yourself before your MOT test.

LIGHTS: Of the 20% failure rate on bike MOT tests, over half are for defective lights. The tester will check that:
HEADLIGHTS and TAIL LIGHTS: The headlight must work on dip and main beam and the main beam should shine directly ahead and the dip slightly lower and to the left or have a flat beam.
INDICATOR lights must all flash at a steady rate.
REAR REFLECTOR must be fitted to the rear of the bike. This reflector must be red and either fitted separately or included as part of the tail light lens.

BRAKES: Faults found with the braking system are the third highest reason for failure in MOT testing. Scary thought!!
BRAKE DISCS are checked to make sure they are securely mounted and free from cracks and run out.
BRAKE PADS and shoes are checked to ensure that they are not worn beyond limits.

WHEELS and TYRES: Over one quarter of MOT failures are due to worn tyres.
TYRES will be checked for tread depth and condition as well as sidewall condition. Your tyres must be compatible and suitable for road use.
CAST WHEELS should be secure and free from cracks.
SPOKED WHEELS will be checked for broken, corroded, loose or bent spokes.
ALL WHEELS will be checked for run out.
So make sure your honda motorcycle parts are roadworthy!

EXHAUST SYSTEM: The decibel level will be assessed at the discretion of the tester and needs to be as close to the original system as possible. They should not have ‘Not for road use’ stamped on them. The exhaust system must not be holed and should be free from leaks from both joints and box(es). The mountings should be secure and not fouling any part of the rear suspension.

MORE CHECKS
- The horn should be of reasonable volume and a continuous single tone.
- All major components, bodypanels and mudguards should be securely fitted.
- The footrests, handlebar levers and brake pedal must be securely mounted.
- Wheel alignment will be checked.

The checks listed above are just a small example of the work that is carried out during an MOT. Motorcycle MOTs take about an hour to complete including the paperwork so it is a very comprehensive test.

When it comes to winter riding, the best way to keep warm is by wearing layers. Insulation works by trapping air in tiny pockets, and these then retain your body heat. Smaller layers are also easier to pack away if you should get warm!

For riding in very cold winter weather, you could start with a base layer of thermal underwear such as Alpinestars Winter Tech Top. This layer will provide huge amounts of extra warmth whilst not adding too much extra bulk and restricting your ride.

Although leathers are seen as the original ‘biker wear’, a move towards textile clothing will help in the winter. Alpinestars Sigma Drystar Jacket Review

This jacket is a real gem from Alpinestars. I have owned mine now for two years, it has allowed me to have an enhanced sense of enjoyment and it becomes more comfortable every time I wear it.

The jacket has a Drystar lining, which is Alpinestars’ version of a Gore-Tex membrane. It works great! An inner zip and an outer zip add to the many features of this jacket. I bought the Sigma due its price point in the market coupled with the manufactures reputation for producing quality products; it certainly represented value and quality. Also the length of the jacket suited me. I frequently ride a CB1000R and a Pan-European. I really wanted something warm that still allowed me the movement and flexibility that my summer gear gives me. Having worn this jacket frequently, I can honestly say that it is warm, represents value for money, and is nicely styled with many features.

Mistletoe Charity Run

Use your Honda motorcycles for a good cause!

In aid of the DORSET & SOMERSET AIR AMBULANCE, this year's Mistletoe Run is this Sunday the 20th December. Assemble on Swanage Sea Front by 11.00am for 11.15am start for the run back to "The Sandford", A351, Sandford Road, for complementary hot refreshments and raffle etc. The length of the run will be adjusted to suit the weather conditions on the day.

The run is open to all powered two and three wheelers and is free to enter with a suggested minimum donation of £5 per bike. Donation forms are also available for your friends to contribute, ask a Dorset Motorcycles Enthusiasts Club member.

Alpinestars SMX-R Gore-Tex Boots Review

Good bits:

These are 100% waterproof!! No really, flooded garage, water half way up the boot, and my feet were still dry! This happened to me several mornings in a row and although the leather on the outside of the boot got wet, my feet (and socks!) were completely dry each day.
Breathable. That’s the brilliance of the Gore-Tex membrane, as well as being waterproof and windproof, the goretex does mean that they are still breathable. This, combined with the perforated leather, means that your feet stay nice and cool in the summer months.
The ratchet closure. Really good if you have either massive (me), or tiny (my dad), calves! The ratchet means that they fit really well, and can be worn on the inside of your textiles, or the outside of your leather jeans.
Comfy to walk in. Obviously the design is to suit being on a bike, but it’s handy to be comfortable when wondering around at the bike races.
Protection – obviously! Shin, ankle, heal and toe protection is all up to the high standards of Alpinestars.

Bad bits:

They might be a bit OTT if you ride a touring bike! They are a bit more orientated towards the sports bike rider, but I’ve seen them worn on a Pan-European before.
The soles aren’t too grippy! Not advised when walking on muddy slopes.

Engine Lubricant Oil: Check levels and ensure that the oil level is not below the minimum marking. Top up if necessary but remember that an engine in good condition should not burn very much oil between changes.

Engine Coolant Level: Check levels and top up if necessary. The coolant level should be between the two marks on the reservoir.

Brakes: Check front and rear brakes separately. The lever, or pedal should stop the wheel fully without being fully compressed. The wheels should then spin freely once they are disengaged. Top up fluid levels if necessary.

Drive Chain: Check condition and lubricate regularly. Chains do stretch so will need adjusting occasionally. There should be 3-4cm of free play (check handbook for exact specs for your bike). This is measured on the lower run of the chain, at the point between the front and rear sprockets. Adjust chain if this measurement is out.

Tyres: Check your tyre pressures regularly, when cold, and make sure they are inflated to meet the specifications for your bike. Inspect your tyres for wear and damage.

Lights / Horn: Make sure all the light functions work correctly, including indicators and brake light. Check the horn works.

Throttle: Make sure the throttle operates smoothly in all steering positions.

Engine Stop Switch: Seems silly, but check the kill switch. We’ve all done it!

Petrol: Make sure you have enough petrol for your journey!

6 Top Tips for Storing your Bike over Winter

Winter is fast approaching and many of you will soon be putting your bike away until the first signs of spring. There are plenty of practical things you can do to keep your bike safe and sound during the winter months so when the sun does appear next year your bike will be all ready to go!

1) Drain the fuel
It is always a good idea to drain the fuel out of your bike if you don’t intend to use it for a while. Petrol goes off and this can cause problems when you come to use the bike again. It’s a great excuse to take the bike out for a long ride on the last sunny day of autumn and use up all your petrol.
Alternatively you can try adding a fuel system treatment such as Silkolene FST. This guards against fuel system corrosion. It is also useful to add this treatment to your bike if you are going to ride it through the winter as it prevents carb icing, protects against cold start engine wear and combats carburettor sticking and jet blocking. Altogether a useful product to keep in your garage!

2) Clean your bike
It is a good idea to give your bike a thorough clean before storing it. Road salt will cause deterioration of exposed metal surfaces if not cleaned off effectively and you don’t want to return to a rusty bike next year. Chemical cleaners sometimes contain solvents, which extract elastomers from the plastic. This causes the material to become brittle so it is wise to avoid these products. If you use a jet wash try to avoid directing the jet of water onto the bearings. The resultant humidity will assist corrosion. To non-painted aluminium parts, like the engine and transmission housing, a transparent protective spray should be used. A good spray is Silkolene All-In-One. It repels moisture, cleans, lubricates and protects against corrosion. Don’t forget to lube your chain.

3) Check the coolant levels
Before you leave your bike to fend for itself during the cold winter months it is advisable to check your coolant levels and top up if needed. Freezing conditions are not good for bikes or riders!

4) Invest in a battery charger
How many times have you gone to start your bike on that first sunny day of spring and discovered that the battery has gone flat. It’s inconvenient and easily avoided. It is recommended that you invest in a Honda Optimate battery charger/optimiser. It is specially designed for modern batteries from 2 to 32 Amp-hours capacity with the ability to diagnose, check and maintain your battery automatically for months. Included with the Optimate are two interchangeable connection harnesses, one with clamps for bench charging, and the other for permanent connection to the bikes battery to allow easy reconnection when necessary.

5) Get a bike cover
If you keep your bike in a garage it may be worth investing in an indoor bike cover. The Honda indoor cover is anit-static and dust repellent. It is breathable so does not allow condensation to form and is lovely and soft, so protects the bodywork from scratches. If you are lucky enough to own a Repsol or HRC Fireblade you can get tailor made luxury covers featuring the bikes unique design colours and logos. All of the indoor covers are a classy design that shows the silhouette of your bike beautifully.

6) Ensure the bike is secure
Finally we recommend that you do everything possible to keep your bike secure so it is still there when you open your garage doors next year. Abus do a wide variety of locks and chains, many of which are Thatchem approved. A ground anchor to lock your bike to is a great deterrent. If your garage is close to your house a disc lock with built in alarm may be a good idea as you will be able to hear the siren go off if the bike is moved. A good quality lock and chain is more expensive to buy but could potentially save your bike from being stolen, thus saving you time and money in the long run.
