The Alpinestars Gunner Waterproof jacket, new for 2014!

We’ve just received the new 2014 season from Alpinestars. There are new jackets, new gloves, new boots…It is now time to get a better look at each of them.

The Gunner Waterproof jacket:

We'll start with the Alpinestars Gunner waterproof jacket. It's a great looking short jacket. The outer shell is treated with a water repellent treatment and the lining is entirely waterproof which allows you a maximum of comfort and dry rides at all times.

The thermal lining is removable, so that you can take it out on warmer days. This jacket has a pretty amazing ventilation system. It has two zippered air intakes at the front and a wide air exhaust vent at the back. You can then play around with the ventilation for your jacket depending on the weather!

On the inside of the jacket there are plenty of pockets stitched on the thermal liner and on the membrane. On the outside there are two usual hand pockets.

You will be able to easily adjust the jacket at the waist with a Velcro tab. The sleeves will fit you perfectly as you get exactly the same Velcro at the biceps and the cuffs. The sleeves are also pre-curved which improves the comfort of the biker in the riding position.

For protection the jacket has CE Certified Bio Armour shoulder and elbow protectors. There are foam paddings at the back and the chest but you can upgrade them by getting proper back protector and chestprotectors from the same brand, which is highly recommended.

What is new is that the back of this jacket is already padded which perfectly covers your lower back in the riding position and adds even more protection. Great comfort and great safety!

If you have a closer look at the design you will find that the jacket has got reflective sections at the front of the shoulders and on the sleeves in order for you to be seen in poor conditions or at night time.

The connection zip at the bottom of the jacket will allow you to connect it with the matching trousers (the Gamble pants).

A bonus with this jacket is that it has a lot of reflective elements on the chest, shoulders, arms and back, as you can see on the picture. It even achieves the reflector norm for France.

This jacket would fit everybody. It has a waist adjustment in order to provide a comfortable fit, and the arms can even be adjusted as well.

The back protector

We tested the jacket with the upgraded back protector instead of the foam padding. It fits really well. You get different sizes depending on the size of your jacket. The back protector is flexible and light so that you don’t feel it when you are walking around. It is also hard enough to protect your spine in case of an accident. It offers optimal impact protection. It is breathable due to the perforation. It is obviously CE certified.

The Gamble trousers

The Gamble trousers are the pants that match the Black 8 jacket. They are touring pants with the same features as the jacket. The detachable thermal liner will keep you warm in winter. Just take it off if it is getting warmer outside! The membrane is waterproof, wind proof and breathable.

These trousers have a lot of feature, including 5 external pockets, plenty of air-vents zips to keep you cool when needed and a waist belt to allow you a great fit. A bonus with this item is that there is a leather anti-slip seat patch.

The knee protectors are CE approved, and there is special foam padding at the hips. You can of course upgrade the trousers by adding hard hip protectors. The Wave gloves

The gloves are made of a mix of leather and textile. The palm is in goatskin, which is highly abrasion resistant and it is doubled for even more safety. The outer shell is covered by a TFL cool system. This system is a revolutionary treatment which helps to reflect solar radiation and helps keep you cool. There is a Gore-Tex membrane inside of the gloves which is fully waterproof and breathable.

This pair of gloves will stay firmly in place thanks to two Velcro flaps. The first one is situated at the wrist and the second one, wider, is placed at the cuff to allow you a great fit either underneath or on your jacket.

Winter will start soon and, for some of us, it is time to look for another pair of gloves to keep us going all way through the cold days of British weather.

The Jet Road gloves from Alpinestars are all weather-riding gloves with a Gore-Tex membrane that will keep you dry at all times. The outer shell is a mix of leather and textile. Alpinestars SP-1 Gloves - A Short Review

I bought my Alpinestars SP-1 gloves in May 2011 and I’m really pleased with them. I don’t wear them every day as I only ride my bike when it’s nice so I didn’t get out much last year! I have been out a lot more this year and the SP-1 gloves have been brilliant.

When I first got these gloves they were a bit stiff but the leather has become more supple and comfortable with age. They seem very robust. All of the stitching is still intact and the leather is soft and hasn’t split or cracked. The gloves do up with Velcro around the wrist and higher up on the cuff. This Velcro is still really strong and keeps the gloves fastened securely.

There is quite a lot of protection on the SP-1 gloves which is the main reason I bought them. The most obvious protection is the carbon fibre knuckles which help to protect me against impact and abrasions. There is also padding on the thumbs, fingers, top of my hand and wrist for extra protection.

These gloves are comfortable to wear in the summer as they do help to keep my hands cool. They have perforated cuffs, leather top panels and ventilated finger sidewalls. They are perfect for me because I only ride my bike on warm, sunny days so the ventilation is very welcome! I haven’t ridden in the rain while wearing these gloves but I guess that they might keep me dry in a light shower. Being made of leather I wouldn’t recommend you wear them in any heavy rain as they are not designed for this and you will get wet!

I think that the Alpinestars SP-1 gloves look really nice. Mine are black and white to match my ‘Blade but you can get them in other colours. I would think that plain black would be the most popular choice. These gloves were £99.95 when I bought them but I have noticed that you can now get them for £69.98 on-line at www.motorbikeplanet.co.uk.

Alpinestars Thermal Tech Socks

I’ve got a pair of Alpinestars Thermal Tech socks and I really rate them. Everyone else is reviewing their expensive jackets, trousers and gloves but I think that these humble, cheap and cheerful socks deserve a mention. There aren’t many Alpinestars products that you can buy for under £20 so if you want to check out the quality of Alpinestars clothing without breaking your budget then these socks are a good place to start.



Alpinestars Thermal Tech Socks



The Thermal Tech socks are knee length which may not be very trendy for the younger riders but are a good length for wearing with your bike boots. Nobody sees your socks when you are all kitted out in your bike gear so who cares what they look like?! I happen to think they are very smart. These socks are made of a warm and breathable moisture wicking knit fabric so they keep your feet nice and toasty when it’s cold but if your feet get a bit too warm then the sweat will be wicked away so you stay dry and fresh. There is a product called Nostatex in the sole which is also takes the moisture away from your skin and has an anti-bacterial, non-odour layer that conducts the heat evenly around your feet to stop you getting hot spots! It’s very clever stuff and my wife particularly like the ‘non-odour’ part.

Lots of socks tend to bunch up around the heel and ankle but these socks don’t. I think it’s due to the ribbed design that keeps them firmly in place. The Alpinestars Thermal Tech socks come in two sizes, Small/Medium which is UK3-7 and Large/XL which is UK8-12. They fit very well and they’re very comfortable.

If you are beginning to think of ideas for Christmas presents then maybe this year you should consider getting socks for your biking loved one. I thoroughly recommend the Alpinestars Thermal Tech socks and I will be extremely pleased to open a new pair on Christmas day!



The Eliminator jacket from Alpinestars: Even the name sounds cool!

I bought this jacket 6 months ago and I thought I would do a quick review on it.

I own a VT750 and I have been looking for a leather jacket, with a certain level of protection, comfortable and more than anything, retro styling. You know what I mean: the total American style, the casual vintage look, the jacket that would perfectly match the style of my bike. I have to admit that the bike looks amazing, I just love it. It’s done its job. I just needed to do mine…

I went to have a look on the Internet (like everybody) to try to find  a certain jacket that could meet my needs.

I was quite surprised to see that almost all the brands offer this kind of style of jacket. I couldn't make my mind up as they all offer more or less the same level of protection. I decided that the best thing to do was to try some on.

I stopped by Honda of Bournemouth on a late afternoon as they are my local dealership. I knew exactly what I wanted as soon as I saw it! The Alpinestars Eliminator jacket has the perfect vintage look and stood out for me against all of the modern, highly armoured style jackets around it.

The Eliminator jacket from Alpinestars includes good safety features, even though it looks more like a casual jacket. The ultra-soft outer shell is made of 0.7mm full grain leather with, of course, a vintage finish.

It has proper CE certified armour at the shoulders and elbows. These protectors are lightweight and slim in profile in order to match the style of the jacket. There is a special pocket for an optional back protector if you want to upgrade the jacket. I was really impressed with this level of protection for this kind of jacket. This was definitely a bonus and a plus to make my decision.

This jacket has also a lot of great features. For example, the fixed long-sleeves inner lining will keep you warm all year around. I don’t bother taking a bag with me when I am riding as the jacket has plenty of pockets: 4 external which are zipped and 2 internal ones, ideal for my wallet and my phone.

The waist adjustment D-ring is also great for riders like me, who loves beer (!), as it allows you to adjust the jacket for a perfect fit.

There are lots of quirky retro looking finishes on the jacket. You have two little vintage clippers at the collar (you will find the same on the inside to close the pockets) and even the zippers are stylish. Not everybody likes vintage gear but for those who do this is the perfect jacket!

I had the choice of two different colours in the shop: black or black/cream. I bought the black one: black bike, black jacket!

To be honest I spent a bit more than I intended on the jacket but it was worth it, I simply love it!

There is also 3mm EVA padding on the fingers and cuff. EVA is a comfortable and lightweight material which provides superior shock absorption and impact protection. The finger bridge between the third finger and little finger helps stop finger roll and separation during impact.

The Alpinestars 365 Gore-Tex gloves are held securely on your hands by a strap around the wrist which is fastened with Velcro. Higher up, around the cuff area, there is an adjustable double cuff which is secured by strong square Velcro pads.
