Shoei GT Air Review

The new Shoei GT Air is brand new for 2013 and it is one of our favourite helmets in the shop. It is extremely comfortable (it comes in three different shell sizes to ensure a perfect fit for every head shape) and one of the quietest full-face helmets we’ve ever seen. The sun visor is probably one of the best features of this new helmet.

Sun Visor

The sun visor and protection
The GT Air is not the cheapest helmet you can find on the market, but as you can imagine, there are a lot of reasons for that: the quality, the finish, the design and the liner fabric obviously add to cost. The Shoei “AIM” shell has specifically been changed to support the internal sun visor without compromising the inner shell and the thickness at the forehead. There is no sacrifice in safety but you get an extra feature to add to the quality of the helmet, and you won’t ever consider of riding again without a sun visor! It does not affect the vision at all. The special lever on the left side of the helmet allows an easy handling with the gloves on. The sun visor is anti-fog and anti-scratch coated. It also lowers down far enough to ensure the best comfortable fit you could find.

Emergency Quick Release System

Protection wise, you also get an Emergency Quick Release System, that you (or somebody) can pull to remove the cheek pads in case of an accident.

The size
You should try one helmet on first to be sure of the size. Your head can be sized up in store so that you will know what size you are. Just be careful as the fit changes between brands, and can even change between models in the same brand too.

Ventilation System
The ventilation
This is another great plus for the GT Air: the effective ventilation. The multiple air inlets and outlets allow a lot of air to flow through. The air flow is directed in a channel on the top of your head. It seems as if it is a more focused system as the air goes inside of a tube, but it works very well. You can open the top vent in two different positions: half open or completely open. This allows you to control the amount of air you want inside of your helmet.
One more thing about the aero dynamism: a spoiler has been directly integrated for the best possible results. Even though the sun visor makes it more touring, the spoiler adds some style and performance to the new GT Air.

The noise
Speaking of the ventilation, I can already see you getting worried behind your computer: ok, the ventilation seems great, but what about the noise level, as everybody knows that the more ventilation you get, the noisier the helmet. Well, the GT Air is one of the quietest full-face helmets on the market. Shoei has obviously made some great work on this side. This is another feature that makes a difference between a “cheap helmet” and a quality helmet.

Removable Lining
The Lining
The entire lining is removable. You can wash it in the washing machine (it is suggested that you put everything in a pillowcase first). It dries really quickly. The cheeks pads come in different sizes so that a Shoei helmet can fit almost everybody. Ear pads have been integrated in order to reduce the noise level. You can take them out and you get a nice space for your speakers.

The use of the Double D-ring makes the helmet easy to adjust, handy to open and close.

The weight
The weight for a GT Air size Medium is 1415g. Considering the fact that there is an internal sun visor that adds some weight on it, this is not a bad one.
Every Shoei helmet comes with a five year warranty from the purchase date.
In conclusion, the New GT Air is a great helmet. Here at Honda of Bournemouth, we are really impressed about it. You can get yours in store or online at motorbikeplanet.co.uk, for £469.99 and you have the choice between different designs. A plain one would be slightly cheaper (£399.99).
